Matamata and the wider district can look forward to a new playground and community gathering space. Following years of lobbying for a bigger and better playground for our community, Matamata Futures has agreed with Matamata Piako District Council (MPDC) to co-design a new playground at the Matamata Domain and lead consultation with our community and stakeholders.
MPDC have confirmed a generous allocation of $1.5 million towards the project, with funds becoming available from July 2024.
With a total project cost of $3 million, Matamata Futures is now looking to raise additional donations from the Matamata Piako community to bolster the budget. While $1.5 million may seem like a lot of money, playground equipment, construction costs, safety surfacing and so on are expensive and increasingly so in today’s terms.
We’re inviting contributions from you to get involved and join us in delivering this amazing new community space. Whether you are an individual, family or local business, anyone can contribute. Join us in creating a legacy for our future generations by donating here.
Boffa Miskell, a leading New Zealand environmental planning and design consultancy, has been selected as the Landscape Architects to lead the project and develop the concept. Boffa Miskell have been involved in creating several award winning playground projects, including Anderson Park in Napier and Te Āhuru Mōwai Playground in Marton , which is of a similar scale to the Matamata Domain project in terms of size and budget.

🌟 Inspiration from Timaru: CPlay Playground! 🌟
As we embark on the exciting journey of upgrading the Matamata Domain, we draw inspiration from the remarkable success of the award-winning CPlay Playground at Caroline Bay in Timaru.
🔧 Community-Led Initiative: Much like our own efforts, the CPlay Playground was a community-led project, brought to life by passionate volunteers. Opened in December 2023, this $3 million community-funded playground was awarded NZ playground of the year 2024.
🌟 Positive Impact: Since its opening, CPlay has become a cherished gathering spot for families, promoting social interaction, physical activity, and outdoor play. It has attracted visitors from Canterbury, Otago, and Southland for repeat visits, bolstering the local economy and solidifying Timaru’s reputation as a family-friendly destination.
💪 Our Vision for Matamata: As we look to upgrade the Matamata Domain, we see the potential for similar positive impacts in our own community. By coming together, we can create a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and beneficial for all ages. Let’s take inspiration from Timaru’s journey and work collectively to achieve great results here in Matamata.
Together, we can transform our community space into a vibrant hub of activity and connection! 🌟

A heartfelt thank you to Wayne and Vanessa Hillis for their Ruby Sponsorship! Together with their daughter and son-in-law, Simone and Karl, they are generously sponsoring our Dual Xylophone in loving memory of their mum, nana, and great-nana, Imelda, who lived with dementia in her final years.
Music is a powerful tool—soothing the mind, sparking memories, and fostering connection. For those with dementia, it can provide a bridge to communication when words are hard to find. This xylophone, accessible to all ages and abilities, will not only bring joy and creativity but also serve as a lasting tribute to Imelda’s memory.
Thank you, Hillis family, for helping us create a space where music brings our community together.
